Fresh Cherries

Anna Baumgart // 10.12 - 22.1 2012

Kalmar konstmuseum has the honor of presenting Polish artist Anna Baumgart’s Fresh Cherries for the first time in Sweden. Baumgart captures the viewer’s attention with a selection of sensitive subjects and an innovative way of telling a story.

Fresh Cherries, a video piece, is based on the idea that we must actively work through our collective historical conscience and illuminate the issues that have been hidden by history. The video deals with forced prostitution in Nazi work camps during the Second World War, a subject Baumgart wants to illuminate in order to end the taboo against talking about sexual violence in war. By experimenting with Hellinger’s therapy method, Baumgart tries to give a voice to those involved - if only through representatives.

The piece is followed by Appendix, a backstory that demonstrates the artist’s path to completing the project.

Anna Baumgart was born in Wroclaw in 1966 and graduated from the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts in 1994.
