The evening was an opportunity to discuss with and better get to know some of those who operate and in different ways are engaged in the Kingdom of Crystal, as well as introduce ourselves and our work.

Our guests for the evening were a mixed group with different experiences, perspectives, and knowledge about the Kingdom of Crystal. Agneta Gustavsson, journalist and editor of the book And then… what happens in the Kingdom of Crystal?, Annette Krahner, designer and project manager for Kris i repris, Susann Johannisson, building antiquarian and author of a report on the glassworks’ environments in the Kingdom of Crystal and their conservation, Kjell Engman, artist and designer at Kosta Boda, Gunnel Holmér, researcher and glass historian, Maja Heuer, director The Glass Factory, Ludvig Löfgren, artist and designer at Målerås glassworks. Markus Vallien, woodworker from Gissamåla, Camilla Ed, project manager at Kalmar Art Museum.

* Hyttsill is an old tradition from Småland. It is said that it began with tramps and vagabonds who came to the glassworks to warm themselves and their herring in the glass furnace. Today Hyttsill is an important part of the creative industry in the Kingdom of Crystal and a popular tourist attraction. Our own Hyttsill version and interpretation begins with a brief improvised performance in which we (Caroline, Eva, Åsa, Johanna, Malin, Ingela) act as tramps. We wanted to start in the role of the tramp to tie the Hyttsill to its origin but also link in with how knowledge is passed around through migration and immigration. The link between the tramp and the role of the artist have been made many times and is a romanticization of alienation that does not benefit anyone. What is shared is the movement between locations. The artist often moves through exhibitions and other projects and between different locations and situations, and study them. Encounters occur and perhaps also new knowledge.

The food is cooked through the hot glass. Markus Vallien is the barista. On a self-made roaster, with parts from an old vacuum cleaner, Markus roasts coffee beans in the glass furnace and the coffee is brewed on hot glass that Åsa collects from the melting pot. When the coffee is ready the show is paused. The coffee is served and the dinner starts. The potatoes are boiled in buckets, the water is heated by hot glass dropped into them. Åsa is blowing bottles and pushes the fish inside, which is cooked in a minute and gets a tasty smoke flavor.

It will be a long evening of intense conversations. From the large questions such as: what is the future for the Kingdom of Crystal, how can it develop, what are the possibilities and difficulties, to the shape of a glass.

(For English please scroll down) Lördagen den 11 april bjöd vi på Hyttsill* på The Glass Factory i Boda.
