Collections and collecting

08/12 - 20/03 2022

In the autumn of 2020 we launched the project Collections and collecting with the exhibition Esteemed Brother – a review of the history of Kalmar konstmuseum and how its collection was initiated. All Aboard continues that exploration through new and old acquisitions. We introduce the artworks that have been added to the collection in 2021 and share some of the work that is being done on the collection throughout the year.

Behind the scenes, record keeping, conservation work and research is continuously taking place. The condition of the art is monitored, but questions are also raised, such as: How was the artwork acquired? Who is the artist? How do we hold on to the stories that exist around the piece? What perspectives are missing? How do we make the collection accessible? How does it stay relevant? Can a collection be fair? Inevitably they lead on to the question of what museums and other cultural places will look like in the future.

Among the new acquisitions to the collection that the public will now be able to see, are the sculpture Tipi (2013) by Åsa Jungnelius, a painting by Christine Sundberg (1837-1892) and a print by Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993). For those who missed Theresa Traore Dahlberg’s artwork Växlingar (Transitions) in early 2021, there will also be a new opportunity to experience how the eight meter high sculpture filled the staircase of the museum.
